#MentorMonday: Charles Mitchell, PE

“The Youngest Engineer meets the FIRST”

Saturday, February 16, 2019, I had the distinct privilege to interview the FIRST licensed African-American engineer in the state of Florida, Mr. Charles Mitchell. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Mr. Mitchell is a trailblazer and pioneer as he has worked on many of the buildings we see and walkthrough today. He cultivated our community by serving as a mentor and reaching back to provide jobs and opportunities for those behind him.

At 83 years old, he feels that his license was something that had to be attained in order for him to continue in his career and to take care of his family.

I am in complete awe of this man and his accomplishments. As a young, Black woman pursuing her engineering and architecture licenses, meeting and conversing with Mr. Mitchell has propelled me to keep going on this path he helped create for me. It’s not everyday that you meet someone who has contributed to your history. Mr. Mitchell deserves to not only be celebrated by me, but by others in his profession, his community, over the nation, and across the world.

With his humble and gentle nature, he managed to give me encouraging words and I found out that I’m the first person to interview him ever; he was never on TV or radio and only made print once in 1965 when he received his license. As someone who embodies character, integrity, and honesty, Mr. Mitchell is truly the representation of what an engineer is and who we should all aspire to be like.

I am forever thankful and grateful to God for giving me mentors that led me to this opportunity and my mother who gave me life!

BLACK HISTORY MONTH ISN’T OVER! Every day, history is being made (and I’m uncovering another hidden gem😉).

AWESOME! I remember Mr. Mitchell from back in the day when I worked as a young draftsman with Mac ( Mr. Albert McCraney) at Gold Coast Planning & Estimating. I remember the countless times Mr. Mitchell helped us out with various projects many of which we wouldn’t nave been able to do without Mr. Mitchell.
