Studying architecture at Florida International University (FIU) to receive my Master’s.

How would you describe your experience as a Black Architecture student?

It feels like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity because it is so rare to see a black student studying architecture. It’s even more rare to see a black woman pursuing architecture. The experience seems to be of solitude. Yes you work with others in group projects, however, there is always that knowledge that you are standing out in the crowd, and that people may view you or event treat you differently because of your skin tone.

Why do you want to get your license?

I believe you cannot truly say you are an architect until you are licensed. The license to me is the cherry on top that truly solidifies one becoming an architect.

Biggest inspiration/influence?

My mother. I know that may seem like a very common and basic answer, but my mom inspire me almost every day. She helps me, guides me, and leads to the resources that have brought me to where I am today. There is still so much I would love to learn from my mom, that I know can only benefit me in my  pursuit of a career in architecture.

How important is representation?

I believe it’s important to have someone that looks like you in the career choice you are pursuing or desire. That person then becomes the physical evidence that this career is possible for me. And the more evidence one has, the more exposed one is to that career and is encouraged to pursue it. I aspire to be a role model for young black women to be knowledgeable of what architecture is and that it is an option in pursuing as a career.
